Academic Standards for Membership into
Greek Organizations at Michigan Tech

(Also available as PDF)

Section 1: Policy

  1. Membership or pledging in Greek organizations at Michigan Tech is possible beginning in the second semester of college attendance for first-time college students.
  2. Membership or pledging in a Greek organization at Michigan Tech is a privilege granted only to active students (statue verified by the Office of Records and Registration) who have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.
  3. The privilege of membership or pledging will be granted to a sophomore (credits earned above 24), junior, or senior student who is on academic probation if her/his cumulative GPA is 2.0 or greater and if she/he is recommended by the leadership of the sorority or fraternity (with supporting documentation) and approved after review in the Office of Student Activities. Recommendation for pledging must be in writing and must describe in detail how the prospective new member plans to improve their academic performance during the time they pledge.
  4. Students who transfer to Michigan Tech after full-time enrollment (completed at least 12 credits) at another college or university (not including advanced placement credit or college credit completed while enrolled in high school) are eligible to pledge a Greek organization during their first semester of enrollment at Michigan Tech.

Section 2: Procedures

  1. A list of prospective new members must be submitted (see “Request to Pledge Students into Greek Organizations” form) to the Office of Student Activities prior to the beginning of any pledging activities.
  2. Greek organizations requesting approval to pledge prospective new members who are on academic probation (sophomore status or higher) must submit all required documentation as described above to the Office of Student Activities at least 7 calendar days prior to the prospective new member being pinned. The prospective new member may not begin pledging until approval has been obtained by the Office of Student Activities.
  3. Greek organizations are required to identify which students (listed on the “Request to Pledge Students into Greek Organizations” form) successfully complete pledging within 14 calendar days after the new members are inducted as full members. Greek organizations that run pledge programs less than four weeks in length are required to identify which students successfully complete pledging within 7 calendar days after induction.
  4. The Office of Student Activities will verify eligibility for each prospective new member identified in the “Request to Pledge Students into Greek Organizations” form.
  5. A pledge class GPA can be calculated for individual Greek organizations. Calculations will not include individuals who did not complete pledge programs.
  6. F. Pledging rosters serve as the sole means for Greek organizations to report membership to the University. Members who are authorized to go “inactive” in their organization are not to be reported to the Office of Student Activities in the reporting process for new members described here. The Office of Student Activities will not calculate “inactive” members into organizational GPAs, but will maintain a roster of “inactive” members for each organization. Organizations are required to keep these rosters current and accurate within the Office of Student Activities.
