Monday, Oct. 12

·      Yoga

Place: SDC Dance Room

 Join yoga instructor, Joan Kero, for a relaxing class where she will teach you to use yoga for stress management.  Feel free to bring your own mat; however, there will be mats available.  All skill levels welcome.

 

·      Pilates

Time: 12:00 pm-12:45 pm

Place: ROTC Gym

 Join Pilates and aerobics instructor, Deb Faust, for a lunch-time workout.  This class aims to strengthen your core and align your spine as you perform very controlled exercises.  Feel free to bring your own mat; however, a limited number of mats will be available.  All skill levels welcome. 

 

·      H1N1 Virus Lunch and Learn

Time: 12:00 pm-1:00 pm

Place: MUB Ballroom B1

 Join Portage Health Community Health Nurse, Geri Merkey, to find out the latest information regarding H1N1, preventing the disease, what to do if you feel sick, and vaccine info.  Bring your own healthy lunch.  Beverages will be provided.  Participants will be eligible for a drawing prize. 

 

·      Tech Trails Tour—For Beginners

Time: 5:00 pm-6:00 pm

Place: Tech Trails Waxing Shed

 Take a ride with C4 (the Copper Country Cycling Club), as they show you around the Tech Trails at a beginner’s pace.  You must have a mountain bike and helmet to participate.  Don’t have a bike?  Rent one with a helmet for half price (only $4!) from the Outdoor Adventure Program, located in the lower level of the MUB.  A limited number of bikes are available.

 

·      Cardio Kickboxing

Time: 5:30 pm-6:30 pm

Place: SDC Dance Room

 Get ready to kick it with Mary Ann Klooster in her high-powered cardio kickboxing class.  All skill levels welcome.

 

Tuesday, Oct. 13

·      Build-Your-Own Healthy Trail Mix

Time: 11:00 am-1:00 pm

Location: Outdoor Adventure Program Rental Center, lower level of the MUB

 Make your own nutritious and delicious snack, sponsored by HOWL (Healthy Options for a Wellness Lifestyle), OAP (the Outdoor Adventure Program) and PCOW (the President’s Commission on Wellness).  Grab some on your way up to “How The Health Are You?” or just as you’re passing by. 

 

·     How The Health Are You?

Time: 11:00 am-4:00 pm

Place: MUB Ballroom

 Find out “How The Health Are You?” at the health and wellness fair sponsored by Portage Health, Counseling and Wellness Services, Student Activities and the Benefits Office.  There will be lots of great screenings, interactive stations, information, healthy food and free giveaways!  Check out the poster here.

 

·     Flu Vaccine Clinic

Time: 11:00 am-4:00 pm

Place: MUB Peninsula Room

 Portage Health nurses will be administering influenza vaccines for Tech students, faculty and staff.  Don’t forget to stop by on your way to or from the health fair!  Cost is $25, and you can pay with credit card, cash, or check.  Billing receipts are available for insurance reimbursement in case your plan will cover the vaccine.  Check out the poster here.

 Join Counseling and Wellness Services staff for a lunch-time walk, complete with walking map and log.  Participants who choose to log their own walks will be entered into a drawing at the end of the month.  Meet outside of Counseling and Wellness Services (the white house next to Fisher Hall) on the campus side.

 Get a total body workout in Toni Larche’s Step & Sculpt class.  You’ll keep your heart rate up in this energizing cardio class while sculpting those muscles through circuit training.  All skill levels welcome.

Place: SDC Multi-Purpose Gym

 Join the Intramural Badminton Team for an exciting match or two.  Racquets will be available.  All skill levels welcome.

 

Thursday, Oct. 15

Place: Start at Gates Tennis Center

 Walk, trot, or run this 1.5 mile course with Intramural Sports.  To register for the trot, or to see a map of the course, visit the IM office on the second floor of the SDC.  All finishers have a chance to win a turkey!

 

·      Ultimate Frisbee

Time: 6:00 pm-8:00 pm

Place: Lower Soccer Field, behind the SDC

 Catch a game or two of Ultimate with the Disco Tech Ultimate Frisbee team.  All skill levels welcome.

·      KISS Club Membership Opportunity

  Students can become a member of Tech’s newest wellness program, the KISS Club (Keep It Safer Sweetheart).  Members have access to low-cost condoms (5 for $1) and other free safer sex supplies.  Coordinator of Student Health and Wellness and HOWL students (Healthy Options for a Wellness Lifestyle) will be holding a mass membership demo.  Bring your student Tech ID!

·      Free SDC Day

Place: Student Development Complex

 Although Tech students are able to access the wonderful SDC facilities anytime, faculty and staff have to pay to play.  Today only, the SDC can be accessed by any Michigan Tech student, faculty or staff for free…just show your Tech ID!  Building, Fitness Center, Pool hours, etc. can be found here.

 

·      Taiji Demo/Class

Time: 12:00 pm-12:50 pm

Place: MUB Ballroom A

 

Larry Wall, who has been practicing and teaching Taiji for over 30 years, will sample several Taiji exercises with you.  He also will introduce the Taiji perspective as it relates to health and wellness.

 

·      Tennis Singles Tournament

·      Dating Doctor: David Coleman

Time: 8:00 pm

Place: MUB Ballroom

  Come enjoy relationship tips and tricks from “America’s real-life Hitch,” sponsored by the MUB Board.  This interactive experience will give you the know-how to build healthy relationships and land that key first date.  David Coleman was named the 2009 National Speaker of the Year and 1st runner up for Male Performer of the Year by Campus Activities Magazine.  He has been featured in publications such as USA Today, People, ESPN The Magazine, CNN, and Access Hollywood.

 

·      HOWL At The Night

Time: 9:30 pm-Midnight

Place: MUB Commons

HOWL students (Healthy Options for a Wellness Lifestyle) will host a late-night event immediately following the MUB Board's Dating Doctor.  There will be free food; fun games; and music, courtesy of WMTU.  Games will include Corn-hole, ladder ball, twister, Yahtzee, euchre and more!  Check out the poster here.

·      Disc Golf Doubles Tournament

Place: Disc Golf Course, behind the SDC

 You don’t need a driver to make par on this course!  Grab a partner and register for the tournament by visiting the IM office on the second floor of the SDC.

 

·      Aerobics

Time: 11:00 am-12:00 pm

Place: SDC Dance Room

  Join an SDC Community Programs aerobics instructor for this “variety-style” aerobics class.  All skill levels welcome.

 

·      Speed Dating, Tech Style

Time: 4:00 pm

Place: Mont Ripley Ski Hill

 Try out your dating skills on Sweetest Day with the MUB Board.  You’ll be extra prepared if you attend the Dating Doctor event on Friday!  Check in at the base of the hill to register and get your identification number bib.  Participants will ride the ski lift with the opportunity to enjoy refreshments at the top of the hill and switch riders at the bottom of the hill.  You can look at the poster here.

 

·      Ontonagon Overnight Canoe and Camping Trip

Saturday, Oct. 17-Sunday, Oct. 18

 Join the OAP (Outdoor Adventure Program) as they canoe down a river in Ontonagon with class 1 and class 2 rapids and camp out overnight! The trip includes canoes, transportation, food, group gear, and a qualified trip leader.  Cost for students, staff, and faculty is $40; $60 for the general public.  Register in the OAP Rental Center, lower level of the MUB.
