Mission

Student Affairs and the Office of Student Activities encourage student involvement in leadership opportunities that promote individual and group development in the areas of interpersonal communication, teamwork, leadership, ethics, civic responsibility and global/cultural awareness.

Goals

  • Develop students to be educated leaders and citizens offering inclusive leadership training, emphasizing leadership skills development and experiential learning congruent with the mission of Michigan Tech and Student Affairs.
  • Deliver programs and services to all student populations and organizations in areas of group development, teambuilding, problem solving, social responsibility, leadership styles, communication skills, diversity and global awareness.
  • Collaborate with students, alumni, faculty/staff in designing and offering leadership education.
  • Recognize and reward students for leadership contributions to the campus/community.

Comprehensive Initiative Outline

The comprehensive student leadership initiative will provide a gateway to students interested in developing leadership skills for life. Educating students about character development, ethical and moral leadership, civic engagement, spirituality, stewardship, and philanthropy will permeate each facet of the program.

    • -- Week-long seminar for students interested in leading with integrity.
    • -- Sponsored by Office of Student Activities and ODK National Honor Society. Week of presentations held on variety of leadership topics.
    • -- Weekend symposium sponsored by Office of Student Activities. Keynote address, workshops, and lectures on a variety of leadership topics.
    • -- Leadership conference sponsored by Air Force ROTC.
    • Student Awards Banquet -- Annual event recognizing students, student organizations, and student leadership.
    • Diversity Leadership Program -- organized by monster.com - A highly-selective leadership program designed to help college students of diverse background get a head start on building their career of choice. A unique opportunity to spend an ALL-EXPENSE PAID (excluding transportation) summer weekend, in one of six major cities with 300 like-minded student leaders.

  • Programs
    • Enterprise Program – Undergraduate minor (20 credit) or concentration (12 credit) curriculum allowing students to prepare for the workplace through operation of simulated businesses. Opportunities for leadership development are embedded throughout the program.
    • Student Organization Retreats – customized workshops ranging from one-hour to three-day sessions for individual student organizations.
    • CenTiLE – Center for Technological Innovation, Leadership and Entrepreneurship CenTILE is charged with the responsibility of promoting interdisciplinary education and research at Michigan Tech. In addition, it will seek to develop cooperative initiatives across the campus aiming at advances in technological innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship. The Michigan Tech Center for Technological Innovation, Leadership and Entrepreneurship (CenTILE) is an intercollegiate/interdepartmental unit with a mission to promote education and research activities on the campus in accordance with the following (initial) mission statement: "Integrate multi-disciplinary undergraduate and graduate education with research in business, engineering, and the sciences to advance innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship. The Center will be a catalyst in the conversion of technology into economic value to businesses in Michigan and throughout the nation."
