Proposed Student Leadership Program
Throughout the 2006-2007 academic year, a team of faculty, staff, and students have been working to create a comprehensive student leadership development plan that organizes Michigan Tech’s current offerings into an intentional system of participation, reflection, and meaningful development. The Leadership Acceleration Team has identified nine desired student outcomes:
Program Learning Outcomes
| 1. Self-awareness and appraisal | 5. Civic engagement |
| 2. Communication skills | 6. Social responsibility/sustainability |
| 3. Collaboration & teamwork skills | 7. Appreciation of diversity |
| 4. Ethical principles | 8. Foundations of leadership |
| 9. Conflict Management and Power |
Similar to a classroom environment, the inclusion of both discovery and application are critical to a
student’s full comprehension of new material and experiences. The proposed program provides
focus on both the act of discovery and the act of application.
| Discovery/Learning | This process engages students in meaningful education to understand their own effective approaches to leadership, and how to use relevant programs, activities, and theoretical frameworks to better understand the principles behind effective leadership. |
| Application/Doing | This process places students in meaningful experiences and encourages them to apply their understanding of ideas about leadership. Intentional reflection and mentoring will guide students through the application phase of the program. |
Realizing that leadership develops in multiple environments, and recognizing the value of those environments in developing a complete leader, the program uses three specific means to engage students in meaningful activities and reflection: Self-Awareness, Working in Teams or Groups, and Society/Community.

Current Progress
The Leadership Acceleration Team is currently developing a timeline for implementing the program, identifying students that will serve as a pilot group for the program, and developing a web-based system for the delivery and collection of information.
