No matter what your role is at the university, each of you have the capacity to demonstrate leadership. From relationships to "official" responsibilities, we play a vital role in determining what happens. Understanding the powerful role that emotions play in the leadership equation sets apart effective leadership from the rest. Realizing that we all have the capacity for enhancing our emotional intelligence opens up new avenues for exploring our own leadership capacity, as well as our ability to work effectively with others.

Student Affairs professionals must be adept at working well with others; however, making this happen is often easier said than done. Emotional intelligence provides a framework for professional and leadership development that student affairs professionals will recognize as immediately relevant. The specific skills of emotional intelligence provide a wealth of strategies to improve individual and team effectiveness. This professional development opportunity will provide you with additional insight into your own emotional intelligence and how to enhance your effectiveness on the job.

MARCY LEVY SHANKMAN, PH.D.

Marcy Levy Shankman has been training and consulting in leadership development and organizational effectiveness with higher education institutions, non-profit organizations, and high schools since 1998. Her work is focused primarily on designing and facilitating curriculum for leadership and organizational development experiences. Dr. Shankman has also created and published two assessments: the EI Profile: An Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment (2003) and the EI Full Spectrum (a 360 evaluation tool).

Dr. Shankman applies her unique insights and capabilities to deliver meaningful and lasting impact for a broad spectrum of organizations. Current and past clients include the Ohio Society of Association Executives, Case Western Reserve University, Voices for Children of Greater Cleveland, Laurel School for Girls, and Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority. For the previous ten years, she has served as a Lead Facilitator for LeaderShape, Inc. Prior to establishing her training and consulting practice, Dr. Shankman held professional positions with the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, the Hillel Foundation at The George Washington University, and the Office of Orientation Services at the University of Iowa.

In addition to a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William and Mary and a Master of Arts from the University of Maryland at College Park, Dr. Shankman earned her Ph.D. from Indiana University in higher education administration in 2001, with organizational creation as her dissertation focus. Dr. Shankman has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at Indiana University and the University of Maryland at College Park.

An active volunteer, Dr. Shankman serves as a mentor to a Cleveland Public High School student, is part of the Alumni Admissions Council for the College of William and Mary, and does assorted volunteer work for her synagogue.

Dr. Shankman lives in Cleveland, Ohio with her husband Brett, daughter Rebecca, and son Joshua.
