Student Training Information
Student Affairs Student Training Task Force has developed a set of training modules to be used in conjunction with individual department training for all student staff that work in Student Affairs. The goal of the training is for every new student staff member in Student Affairs to have an holistic training experience that will provide them with foundational skills and knowledge to represent all of Student Affairs, as well as provide them with professional development they can apply in future employment opportunities. You might think of this as the “general education” for Student Affairs and the specific training you provide in your department as the major specific portion. The program was introduced in the fall 2007. Based on feedback we receive from presenters and students, we will continue to make changes to the modules as needed.
The training consists of four modules that are 45 minutes each in length and will be covered in one morning or evening. Pizza, salad and refreshments will be served at the evening session. Beverages and light bakery will be served at the morning session.
The modules include:
- Module 1 - Michigan Tech Student Affairs Organization & Facts You Should Know (ppt) (pdf)
- Module 2 - Customer Service (ppt) (pdf)
- Module 3 - Understanding Difference (ppt) (pdf)
- Module 4 - Leadership and Role Modeling (ppt) (pdf)
Listing of all students that have attended SA Common Training as of September 14, 2009 (pdf)

Departments should pay their students to attend, except those that are compensated by room and board by your department.
By the first of the training month, please provide the names of the students who will be attending. We will need their name and email addresses. Please send this information to Lynda Heinonen lheinone@mtu.edu. She will send them a reminder regarding the training.
